Its casualties have come to include 5.1 million lost jobs and economic contraction at a 6.3 percent annual rate. Economists expect it to slog on through the end of the year. Even professions previously thought to be recession-proof, from legal offices to funeral parlors, are buckling.
While it seems to be all doom and gloom, not every industry is struggling. Some industries and products have continued to hang on or even to do better in the downturn.
