This year Clinica Biblica became the first hospital in Costa Rica and only the second in Latin America to receive JCI accreditation. The hospital has operated since 1929. It has a $50 million infrastructure (including a new $35 million building) for 200 physicians specializing in cardiology, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics, and preventive medicine. Doctors also perform a large number of minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures such as bariatric surgery, arthroscopy, hernia repair, prostatectomy, gall bladder removal, hernia repair, and colonoscopy. Many of the physicians are bilingual and trained in the U.S. or Europe. More than 20 percent of Clinica Biblica patients are international travelers. Patients can save 70 percent or more of U.S. or Canadian surgery charges. A knee replacement, using the same equipment and techniques as in the U.S., costs $10,700more than 70 percent lower than typical U.S. charges.
