Metropolitan Florence Nightingale Hospital opened in 1997 as the third hospital in a group owned by the Turkish Cardiology Foundation. It earned JCI accreditation in 2003. The hospital's bronchoscopy unit provides radiotherapy from inside the lung. Doctors say this shortens the treatment for lung cancer, enhances effectiveness, and halves the incidence of problems arising from radiotherapy. In vitro fertilization and fertility units are available. Six operating suites are used for procedures including microlaparoscopy, laser cataract removal, and prostate surgery. Imaging technologies include digital angiography, CT, mammography, and ultrasound. Nuclear medicine and nuclear cardiology units use images from a gamma camera to determine the extent of damage from myocardial infarction. In cancer care, the hospital is the only center in Turkey modeling itself after the handful of comprehensive cancer centers designated by the National Cancer Institute in the U.S. Diagnosis, medical, and radiation oncology treatment units work in cooperation. Cancer physicians can consult by satellite with colleagues at U.S. cancer centers.
