Smokeless Tobacco May Not Help Smokers Quit

Success in Sweden doesn't transfer to U.S., study finds

Posted: February 12, 2009

THURSDAY, Feb. 12 (HealthDay News) -- Cultural factors appear to influence whether smokeless tobacco can help smokers quit cigarettes, contends a new study.

In Sweden, many smokers try to quit smoking by using snus, a form of moist, powdered tobacco that's placed under the lip. In Sweden, snus is more popular among male smokers, and Swedish men have higher smoking cessation rates than women.

Some people have suggested that public health officials in the United States and other countries should promote smokeless tobacco as a way to help smokers quit cigarettes.

However, University of California, San Diego, researchers examined data collected from more than 15,000 people in the United States and found that smokeless tobacco does not increase American smokers' quit rates.

"With an ongoing tobacco control effort, men in the U.S. seem to be quitting smoking at higher rates than men in Sweden. And U.S. women are quitting at the same rate, unlike their counterparts in Sweden," study author Shu-Hong Zhu, a professor of family and preventive medicine in the UCSD School of Medicine, said in a university news release.

The study found that:

"Many public health officials and scientists have cautioned that the Swedish results may be unique to Sweden," Zhu said. "This research confirms that."

The study was published online in the journal Tobacco Control.

If you are going to chew, chew copenhagen the rest is generic. chewing tobacco high lasts longer than a cig. you may be able to quit smoking but you will not be able to quit chewing. i have no care to smoke a cig. when I have a dip in my mouth. In my opinion chewing tobacco is more addictive than cigs.

Good point

I just began to use Camel SNUS to quit smoking a pack a day. I going to try to use it for a while and see what happens, but I know for sure that I never really liked smoking, I began smoking with friends at parties because it seemed cool around the age of 18 (I'm 26 now) and it is not fun to be around 7 people who smoke when you are not. The smoke bothered me before I smoked, but while I smoked the smell didn't bother me anymore. I'm finally back to hating the smell, and that is a big help when you can look from the outside in and see from a non-smokers perspective again. I had no clue what SNUS was last week and now i've quit smoking. I feel now that it was only an addiction to nicotine that I have and not a ciggarette. I hope I can quit for good. I can breathe again after only three days. I hope to curtail the withdrawl with SNUS. I commend anyone who tries to quit, I wish I were stronger and could quit cold turkey, but I just felt horrible without the buzz from nicotine. My father passed away at the age of 73 from lung cancer around three years ago 2005 and he quit cold turkey when I was born, so I quess I want to learn from him. He quit when he was 49.
