Prevention of Domestic Violence

The way men have been socialized has had the biggest impact on domestic violence. The acceptability of the use of aggression towards women has played a big part in men's conditioning, a conditioning leading men to think of themselves as entitled to tell women what to do. Androcentric societies have always left women more at risk of domestic violence. Societies where men and women have been forced to behave within the strict confines of limited stereotypical roles have been the societies with the most violence against women. A society that wants to prevent domestic violence must do away with the products of conditioning, namely sexist advertising and entertainment causing the exposure of youth to violent and sexual images. Until that is done, treating domestic violence is likely to get no further than a bunch of bottom burps on talk show t.v.
