Best Diet Preservatives and Malnourishment

I am close to following the Esselstyn diet. Almost no added fat and meat. I do eat very low fat dairy milk and egg beaters but no cheese.

A few things.

I may have been malnourished for iodine as my throid enlarged.

Also many of those on the mediteranian diet do not use preservatives. I work out with an 84 year old italian who makes most of his own food and wine including sausage, does not wear glasses and is helping his grandson remodel a house. He recently replaced a water heater and drug the old one upstairs by himself. This is one case but it makes me wonder. He is a little over weight. I believe that his wife is going strong also.

My hunch is that plastics and household chemicals and insecticides might cause some diseases.

To drink or not to drink...

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) strongly urges women not to ignore the public health warnings associated with consuming alcohol while pregnant. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/96691.php

Therefore, ACOG reiterates its long-standing position that no amount of alcohol consumption can be considered safe during pregnancy.

Now, if alcohol isn't good for a growing baby, how come it's good for a grown up human... new cells are constantly being created in every human body.

I would sincerely caution your authors to carefully research important articles that have far reaching and long lasting effects. e.g. "washing it all down with a glass or two of wine" has been stated in a lax manner... unknowing readers have no way to sift the sensational from reality. You will lose my respect that you've earned over 17 years from this loyal customer. I agree with the other commenter who stated that health benefits come in large part from the veggies in a Mediterranean diet. You would do well to bust myths after careful research which takes effort. It's easy to write a sensational article but hard work requires sacrifice but yields richer rewards.

Where is the Vegan Pyramid?

Research has shown that adding any type of oil to your diet can be detrimental to health. It is not the olive oil that makes the Mediterranean Diet so good but the large daily amount of fruits and vegetables. Are some fats better than others? Certainly. Are refined fats natural whole foods? No. Can you get all the fats you need in your diet? Absolutely. Avocados, coconuts and raw nuts are perfect sources of fats in a natural package with all the vitamins and minerals intact.

Caldwell Esselstyn, MD, did a 18-year long study where he reversed the heart diseases of his patients by changing their diet. It is doubtful if this would have been possible with the Mediterranean diet. Watch an interesting lecture here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5215695644951404318&ei=Er_mSuzpH9qv-AbR67n_Dg&hl=nb#

I am not saying the Mediterranean Diet is bad, but there are better options available for those seeking supreme health. Hint: Its the Veggies, not the Oil.
