Asthma and Swine Flu: What You Need to Know

Asthmatics are at increased risk of complications from swine flu, so they need to stay on alert

With the H1N1 vaccine becoming more widely available, news that asthma is the most common chronic medical condition found among people hospitalized for severe complications of H1N1 hits close to home for asthmatics and loved ones of people with the lung condition. Health experts say H1N1 data suggest that asthmatics need to be particularly cautious about avoiding the flu or managing it, as they are at higher risk for complications than the general population. What do they need to know? U.S. News consulted James Li, chairman of the Division of Allergy at the Mayo Clinic and coauthor of an article on H1N1 and asthma that was published this month in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. Edited excerpts:

What do we know about asthma and the risk of H1N1 complications?
People who have asthma are at high risk for respiratory complications if they contract H1N1 influenza. Because of this, they should have an updated asthma action plan [which describes daily asthma treatment and how to control worsening symptoms] ready in the event that they do get sick.

Should all asthmatics get vaccinated against H1N1?
For the most part, yes. We recommend that patients with asthma get vaccinated, which we expect will reduce infections and thus reduce complications. They should get the injectable version of the H1N1 vaccine rather than the nasal version, which could trigger an asthma attack. Asthmatics should also get vaccinated against seasonal flu annually.

But there are some particular groups of patients who should not get H1N1 vaccinations, including those with egg allergies or those who've experienced a severe reaction to the seasonal influenza vaccine in the past. [In these situations, some people may still be able to get vaccinated after seeing an allergist to determine whether the dosage can be safely adjusted to avoid a negative reaction.]

What symptoms might asthmatics with H1N1 experience if they're having complications?
Two major complications that are seen in people with asthma are pneumonia and an asthma exacerbation. Symptoms of asthma exacerbation include increased cough, shortness of breath, and wheezing. A high fever, chills, and a productive cough would be more suggestive of pneumonia.

If a person is asthmatic and suspects he or she has H1N1, is it important to see a doctor immediately?
In general, if someone has asthma and thinks he or she may be coming down with an H1N1 influenza, my recommendation would be to call the doctor, because depending on severity of symptoms, if there is an asthma attack developing, that should be treated. Or, if there seems to be a rapidly progressive course of illness, such as problems breathing or an inability to hold down fluids, that could warrant hospitalization.

[Another reason to contact your doctor: The antiviral medication Tamiflu (oseltamivir) can help you get better faster, but it's available only by prescription. The antiviral drug Relenza (zanamivir) is not recommended for asthmatics because it carries a risk of breathing problems.]

Article about the H1N1 the reporter had

I live in New York state as well and pretty much had the same symptoms as the reporter in the article. I do not have asthma so I was lucky... I still have the cough and fatigue, but feel the worst is over. It was good to read an article written by someone who actually had the H1N1 flu, that makes it a little easier to understand how the flu can impact different people, depending on their health situation.

It's all a Conspiracy

Here is the deal no matter what happens we have no part in it. Whether it is tis or whatever...but what is certain is that 9-11 was an inside job, and there is too much proof to surround this than most know of. For instance the first 3 steel frame buildings ever to collaps due to fire. WTC, and WTC 7. Also the wargames going on which hardly anyone knows about involving the government prepairing for a terrorist attack involving planes being used as guided missles. And the towers collapsed in a way that is not possible when involving free falling due to damage. The way these buldings pancaked was much like a detonation. Which reminds me. A majority of people in or around the buildings at the time heard numerous explotions prior to the towers collapses. Why did we wait 2 hours before sending planes to intercept? Why did we know that at least 3 of the 9-11 terrorists, also big roles in attack were terrorists, yet we did not question it. Why were 2 of those terrorists living using their full names in the same apartment, same room as an FBI agent? Why was none of this included in the full report. Why is there only one video for the Pentagon? Why are there no plane parts at the pentagon? Where are the plane parts for the Pennsylvania plane known as flight 93? And more so, why did the EPA tell people ground zero was safe for clean up, when actually it wasn't and it caused many people to become ill and even death. Also, before we could evaluate the frames of the I dont know either the 47 built to take on a plane colunms of the towers Or the massive steel framework to china immediately after the collaps and melted them down? Isn't that against FBI regulations because it is the destruction of of evidence. Did you know that aspestus was in the towers and it would have cost 1 billion dollars to fix. That is just one motive, there is so much more information out there for the public, and there is a clearer explination as well. I just wanted to make you all think and take into consideration that our government is screwing with us. Go to infowars.com or even just look up 9-11 inside job on any internet search engine. Discover the truth for yourself because the government will not give us the truth.

must we use scare tactics?

I really tire of the endless "do this or you put yourself at risk" tact. Remember how the west nile virus went? And how many people were seriously injured by that?

I don't ever want to minimize a serious threat. What I don't like is that the "only" answer to these threats always involve big pharma, with side-effects minimized. Nothing works for everyone the same way. I hate the simplified way they go about developing drugs. And I hate that they think they are mankind's only answer health and wellness (more like to death and sickness).
