Health Tip: Your Diabetes Health-Care Team

Who should be on it

Posted: February 18, 2009

(HealthDay News) -- If you have diabetes, you need more than just a primary care doctor to help manage your health.

The American Diabetes Association says other specialists also should be considered as part of a diabetic's medical team. They include:

Dental Treatment Can Help Reduce Blood Sugar

Great article, and thank you for including dental therapy on the health care team for treatment of diabetes. Research has shown that dental care can help lower blood sugar and even reverse gum disease. That's vital for people who have elevated blood sugar, especially those caught up in the type 2 diabetes epidemic, because gum disease and high blood sugar levels interact in ways that make both conditions worse. This troublesome combination also significantly increases risks for catastrophic health events including heart attack, stroke, blindness and kidney disease. We have written extensively about the importance of dentistry in the team approach to diabetes care at http://dentistryfordiabetics.com/blog/?s=team.

Dental Care for Diabetics

While a dentist may be helpful part of the dentist's team, the Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH), is a key player. Oral hygiene, more accurately called oral infection control, is key and the RDH is the person who can guide you through the mess in the dental care aisle at the store.
