What's the Best Way to Catch Breast Cancer Early?

Without a doubt, the best way to detect breast cancer early is to have regular screening mammograms beginning at age 40. While it is not clear how much breast self-exam adds to early detection, it is free and is recommended monthly for women beginning in their 20s. Women should also have a clinical breast exam as part of their annual health checkup.

Not all breast cancers have a lump

and doctors and women need to know this. I was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer 11 years ago. It almost killed me. I was 30, had no history of anything and the diagnosis was missed by numerous doctors at multiple facilities.

Better education for both doctors and women that this disease exists would give those diagnosed a better chance at survival. I was lucky. Despite my stage IV diagnosis, I survived, but the majority don't.
