Urine Reveals a Smoker's Risk of Lung Cancer

Recent research announced at the American Association for Cancer Research meeting found that high levels of 2 chemicals detectable in smokers' urine correlated with their likelihood of developing lung cancer, Bloomberg News reports. Subjects with high levels of both chemicals, which are byproducts of tobacco smoke, had 8.5 times the risk of developing lung cancer that those with low levels of the chemicals had. The urine test is not yet available to the general public, and the researchers say a commercial version of the test will take at least three to five years to develop.

Milk: Curative Salve for All that Ails a Woman?

Inspired by a series of commercials that suggest downing milk can alleviate PMS symptoms, brighten dull hair, and improve a woman's overall happiness, U.S. News's Katherine Hobson explores the science behind the benefits of milk—and separates fact from fairy-tale fiction. For example, calcium and vitamin D seem to alleviate symptoms of PMS, at least in some women. But it's not as simple as some advertisements might have you believe. If women choose to include milk in their diet, Hobson suggests going for the low-fat or skim varieties, since one study showed whole milk was actually associated with a higher rate of PMS.

In related news about dairy food sources, read what science says about the safety of drinking raw milk, a dairy product cropping up in certain corners of the country. Assume all yogurts have vitamin D? They don't. Here are 17 yogurts that actually do contain vitamin D. Plus, consider the relative benefits of Greek versus regular yogurt.

Getting Laid Off From a Small Company Might Mean No COBRA Assistance

As part of February's economic stimulus package, a COBRA subsidy was passed that gives 65 percent of COBRA premiums, for nine months, to workers who are laid off between September 2008 and the end of this year. But here's the rub: The subsidy applies only to workers laid off from companies with 20 or more workers. Those at smaller firms have to rely on state "mini COBRA" laws to determine whether the subsidy is available. U.S. News's Michelle Andrews writes about another area where workers laid off from such companies with fewer than 20 workers can get pinched.

Tax increase on poor smokers rises by 2,250%

That's right. The tax on loose tobacco to roll your own went up from $1.10/lb to $24.87 a pound. Rumor has it this was the tobacco companies doing because so many people switched at the last round of tax hikes. This is now going beyond simple discrimination. Anti-smokers are rabid to punish smokers now, while at the same time denying any responsibility to help the poor children of America get health care. Hypocrites. Well, this time, I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore. The mouse that roared. In the immortal words of Ronald Regan, "They counted on us to be passive. They counted wrong."

One smoker with a terminal disease and less than a 50/50 chance of surviving the year.

What could he possibly do to us? If you want to change the world, you do it with thought.

SMOKERS TAX REVOLT! AS GOD SAID, "PHYSICIAN HEAL THYSELF." I'M NOT A PHYSICIAN SO I HAVE TO GO TO MY TWO DOCS TO MAKE ME WELL. ANTI-SMOKERS GET ABOUT $25 A MONTH IN CIGARETTE TAX FROM ME. FINE. I'LL SEE YOUR $25 AND RAISE YOU 2,250%. WORKS OUT TO ABOUT $5,600 A MONTH I WILL NOW SPEND ON HEALTH CARE. SINCE I'M DISABLED AND HAVEN'T HAD ANY INCOME FOR A YEAR, THE STATE GIVES ME FREE HEALTH CARE. I HAVE A LOT OF HEALTH ISSUES. NOT RELATED TO SMOKING. I USED TO IGNORE THEM HOPING I WOULD GET SOMETHING FATAL TO PUT ME OUT OF MISERY LIKE YOU WOULD DO FOR A DOG YOU LOVED. NO MORE. I'M GETTING FIXED UP WITH THE FINEST MEDICAL CARE AND MEDICINE YOUR MONEY WILL BUY. IF SMOKERS HAD A TEA PARTY, USING THIS IDEA, IT WOULD DEVASTATE THE ECONOMY OF THE U.S. AS WELL AS THE REST OF THE WORLD THAT IS EVEN HARSHER ON SMOKERS. I'M NOT SAYING WE SHOULD BRING THE WORLD TO IT'S KNEES. I JUST SAY WE HAVE THE POWER. ALL WE NEED TO DO TO REPEAL THE TAXES IS TO FLEX OUR MUSCLES A LITTLE. SAY FOR ONE DAY. I PICK 9/11/09, BECAUSE 9/11/2001 WAS THE DAY THAT DEVASTATED MY LIFE. SMOKERS UNITE AND OVERTHROW THE OPPRESSORS. I'LL START FIRST.

smoking

The pollutants in cigaretts are causing cancers in non-smokers and also causing climate change. The slogan "Another cigarette will help seal your coffin" may send a stronger message than just quit.

Smoking studies are nothing more than hyped theory

To all the anti smoking haters, there still after 25+ yrs of research, no PROOF what so ever that smoking will kill you or cause even 1% of the damage that so called studies that make false claims will occur. If thier numbers are correct and thier theories are correct, then this world would have over 60 million less residents that currently living on the planet. Tobacco use has been around for a very long time, its use was more prevailent than now in percentage of users. If the almighty money machine of BIG PHARM IE Anti smoking drugs, aids. The Political Forum, IE BIG $$ Donations for policy effect, and BIG $$ Charities and Research facilities in the 100 of millions of dollars. People wake up... Anti smoking is not as dangerous as they make it out to be, the truth is your local factory puts out more pollution and healthrisk pollution out into the air in one hour than a ballroom of smokers smoking for a month straight. Is smoking good for you... no, but neither is drinking booze, eating chocolate, using salt, butter, eating too much anything or 1,000,000 other things in this country that is to ail you. But yet smokers are forced into unfair doctrine by the elitist money making so called honest professionals who like sheep you follow blindly. Go look up in the AMA Journals.. there is NO PROOF that smoking kills only so called links that use words like MIGHT CAUSE, COULD CAUSE, LEAN TOWARDS, but NO PROOF. This is like saying eating 4 apples a day could lead to fermentation of the apples in your digestive system and form hard cider, which could get you drunk just from eating apples. Get a clue and stop listening to all the hype! BAAH!
