Online degree programs are the wave of the future and more colleges are realizing this. With increased public demand for significantly lower college costs, the online degree option will appeal to both the universities and students.

I have found that online education is the best means of education for the working adult.

Proctors at Libraries and College Testing Centers are great for Adults who work to be able to complete the many online college classes.
I've taken 7 or so college credit classes by this method and find that I'm actually much more focused.
In addition, I have no post-work drive time in rush hour to get to the classes and no child care.
In fact I was/am often able to do class work after my child is in bed.
I'm able to take test in the testing rooms on Saturday if I choose.

Simple. The use of authorized proctors is one way to authenticate that the test taker is in fact the person they claim to be. How does one authenticate themselves in a brick and mortar program? In the end it all comes down to trust. Trust that the student ID is correct (authenticated likely by drivers license, SSN, etc). The same principle can hold true for remote proctors (many of which are local universities, colleges, and professional test taking institutions). Ever taken a standardized test?
Online education is a key enabler in bridging the gap between the "haves" (those who can relocate to campus) and the "have nots" (those that cannot due to life circumstances). It is great that the Ivy League and other comparable world-renowned institutions are opening themselves up to "non-traditional" students.

Unfortunately, you will be left behind. Technology has changed our entire landscape and entire industries have been forced to adapt. Those most resistant to the change normally get left back. I commend Dartmouth for thinking long term.

One comment:
How does one ever prove -- even if you knew from which computer the information originated, you could never prove whose fingers were on the keys!
YOU WANT TO AWARD ADVANCED COLLEGE DEGREES WITH THAT BEING A FACTOR?
