This is certainly an interesting development in the area of online education. I'm sure that students who are living under challenging circumstances that demand both flexibility and accessibility are particularly thankful for these recent developments. Sites like http://www.art-schools-online.com/ provide extensive online opportunities for students seeking a suitable education program that will enable them to obtain a degree in their chosen industry, whether it's a degree in health care, web design courses, or further graduate studies. I believe that one of the biggest advantages of virtual learning is the accessibility and flexibility that will allow students to maintain a full-time job and a busy lifestyle, without sacrificing quality education.

The Internet’s greatest achievement is without doubt how it has democratised information and learning. online educaton website is constantly increasing as online technologies become a bigger part of the educational process, and as students and prospective students turn to the internet for information.

Hey I think online education is a good thing, I hav e taken great classes, but does it have to cost so much and to pay professors so little? Most of the funding in the US comes from Uncle Sam in the form of student loans and grants, for the University of Phoenix it's 95% by one measure (see p 44 of their annual report http://bit.ly/dgHcNW). Great thing, needs work, be more fair for teachers and less a government-contract deal, IMHO.

We as educators must not grasp at mediocre tools or “free” technology because these are abounding. Note I present many free technology tools that are feature rich and easy for the teachers and students to learn and individualize. We really believe in anytime access to education at individualized paces and lessons/assessmens.

Below I have presented some examples of what can be improved and what needs improvement and how to measure or best evaluate.

Educations needs to adapt to the way students now learn and each student learns- 21st Century Skills. Sometimes it is easier to do this on-line than to retrain professionals. In my perfect world there would be a balance and a place for students who are not enjoying the current environment to find supplemental or alternative learning environments/ activities. I say supplemental as sometimes the adapting to the current set of rules and finding ways to make changes is a great lesson.

Students need to be challenged and sometimes frustration leads to creative problem solving. How do we balance these variables? I think we are just beginning to understand the benefits of a balanced approach. One thing we know is that the drop-out rate has increased and we – America needs each students gifts/uniqueness to solve our problems and to compete in the 21st Century. I heard an business lady comment, “ It is a matter of Homeland Security”.

Also from my QA and business analysis background I am glad to see folks are working hard to identify the success criteria and measurements for education. The gains are not to be found in only county, school, class statistics but with each individual’s previous success and current situation. How and why can a mathematically gifted child make D's in class and fail to pass standardized tests and check-out of learning. Why can a teacher get by with dogging a child just because they have not taken the time to understand the student’s successes and skills vs. the AFIs – Areas for Improvement and training.

It is difficult for a tool to show the energy, work ethics, passion, and blessing of a great teacher or problem solver - many great teachers possess this ability and have dedicated their life to their students. I am married to such a teacher. My students and professors said I had those skills. One student said “I played with their mind”. I later worked similar skills in business for many years. We desperately need those teachers and we need tools to help them reach the masses, i.e. manage larger classes (due to the budget) and cut the paperwork. Let these teachers use tools to reduce paperwork. Help them learn easy systems for LMS vs. just free tools to supplement their teaching skills or to appeal to students who think technology is the only future. Support your challenging (or sometimes mislabeled difficult teachers) who consistently help students achieve much more than the norm for that child, class, school, county, state and understand AFIs-Areas for Improve

Online education allows busy adults to plan their schooling around their jobs and children's school functioning. Also, with the around-the-clock business world we live in, many people would find getting a second degree impossible if it were not for online classes.

... but it's not easier! It's great that more people are taking advantage of online education. It takes a very devoted student to make it through online degree courses successfully. Here's an article that lays out tips for online degree students:

Online education also opens doors by making it possible for more students who can do the work to get admitted, and therefore get the chance to show they can succeed. I think online education has also has had the effect of challenging face-to-face instruction to improve ... because online can apply technological improvements that face-to-face may not seriously consider ... simply relying on lecture. Susan Patrick, from the Dept of Ed recently said, in an interview with Education Week, that the K12 research suggested that online ed is really just a better choice for some students because of the one-to-one nature of the online education process. I think this same effect is likely to occur in higher ed as well. Since I have a website on online grad schools, I was happy to learn that master's degrees are one of the growth areas. Keep on going online ed!
