I think you need to be careful about narrowing your choices too early in the college search. As a private college counselor, I want students to keep their options open. If you narrow them down too much, you may end up with too few options. It is also important for students who need financial aid to have a number of schools so that they can compare their financial aid packages and decide which school is best for them. It may save a little work to narrow down your choices early, but that is the only advantage I can see.
