Don't forget textbooks.. They use up some of your budget.. I found the best way to save is with amazon.com, or postyourbook.com.. GL

She should have used her own money for those $3,258 in sorority fees. That's unnecessary and ridiculous.

Julie and Lindsey, good ideas, good information. Since personal finance is not taught in high school (or there's one course for 2000 kids and it's tough to get into), much of this education must happen at home.

Part of the application process should include family discussions about cost -- and what can be afforded. Once the applications are in, it's probably a good time to focus on which expenses the student will be responsible for, and developing guidelines on when parents will help out, i.e, some sort of emergency, but not new boots.

Thanks for a post that can serve to get this critical conversation started.
