Public Service Pays Off With These Scholarship Opportunities
Tweet Share on Facebook June 21, 2012 CommentOn June 23, the United Nations will observe its 9th annual Public Service Day. In the words of Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, the honorees at this year's event in Tanzania are public servants and groups who "embody the essential building blocks of good governance: integrity, citizen participation, respect for diversity and gender equality, and effective knowledge management." These are great guidelines for students, too, and if you're aspiring to a career in the public service sector, there are plenty of scholarship, fellowship, and financial aid opportunities for you.
As you'd expect in the public service sector, there are a number of federal programs that can help keep your debt down. Loan forgiveness plans for public servants began in 2007, and if you're serious about a long-term commitment to a public service career, they can pay off.

7 Scholarship Tips for Single Dads
Tweet Share on Facebook June 14, 2012 CommentSince the founding of our nation, parents have hoped their children would have a better life than they did. These days, the ability for parents to provide that better life usually requires education beyond high school. In fact, according to several sources, more than 60 percent of all jobs in the United States now require some form of college or training after high school. On top of that, more education means higher salaries—not to mention greater job security.

There are some options listed in our piece about scholarship resources for single moms, which included seven scholarships available to single parents of either gender. Remember, though, you're more than just a single dad, so that shouldn't be the only criterion you use to search for educational scholarships. Here are seven tips to help kick off your search:

Dive Into These Ocean-Related Scholarships
Tweet Share on Facebook June 7, 2012 CommentIf saltwater is your specialty, most likely you already know about World Oceans Day, which happens every year on June 8—and is just around the corner! There's so much that has yet to be discovered about marine life, which means there are also plenty of career opportunities available if you've always been interested in the world under the sea. The Scholarship Coach wants to help you celebrate World Oceans Day by offering some college scholarship opportunities that can give you a jump start on swimming with the fishes.
Every year, the education department of the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society presents the Dolores E. Fisher Award to a young woman interested in studying oceans, in honor of record-breaking diver Fisher's extraordinary achievements and passion for oceans. Applicants must be 35 or younger and are judged based on their demonstration of strong ocean-related career goals. If you win the $1,000 award, you'll also be invited to spend some behind-the-scenes time at the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum in Key West, Fla. Though this year's award cycle ended in April, be on the lookout beginning in January 2013 for your opportunity to apply.
