yeah my 1500 dollars a month is keeping me from buying a house. sucks.

You are missing the point. I have a profitable career, as does my husband. But right now the $2,500 we are paying every month to our student loans (that is not a typo) will prohibit us from every owning a home - seriously, I am not being facesious - invsting our money, and participating in other activities that generally help the economy. The recently enacted "Pay As You Earn" plan would lower our monthly payments by at least a few hundred dollars, however we do not qualify since neither of us received loan disbursements after October 2011. This proposed bill would, seemingly, place our husband and I in a similar situation, freeing up a few hundred dollars every month. Oh, and that's not even to mention the interest rate cap! My loans (all federal) average at 7.4%. By reducing that to 3.4%... the prospect makes me so happy I literally have no words.

It's not even about trying to get something for free. Those who abuse the system really ruin it for those who really need the help. I am currently in grad school and my husband is active duty military. The issue we are facing is we will soon be stationed in Europe and they have very strict rules about working in the European economy and operating a HHB. The waiting list for jobs out there is crazy, the jobs are sparse and if I am lucky to land a job, it's min wage. I will graduate while we are out there and then I have to find employment as well as start to pay back by student loans. How are we going to afford it when we have children and he only makes 30k? Especially since it would be near impossible to find a job while being stationed out there for 4 years? Not asking for loan forgiveness, but how about something for us mil spouses who get restricted in finding ways to make extra income while overseas? How about renegotiating the SOFA agreement so we can have HHB's? I am more than happy to pay back what I owe. And I am not expecting anyone else to have to pay for my education. But sometimes, we do really need the extra help!

Whatever happened to following through with contracts? Choose profitable careers, be successful, and pay your bills. I grew up in a shack, worked hard, took out loans, got a good job, paid the loans back. Yes, I had a low-income federal job for several years, but I drove an old car, didn't have a cell phone or other fancy gadgets, and I didn't party. If I was a lender and this was passed, there is NO WAY I'd keep loaning money. Quit asking for handouts. There are no free lunches.

I'd like to know if there is any relief/forgiveness for one of the world's oldest college kids. I'm 63 yrs old and would really like to retire. The only thing keeping me from doing that is this student loan.

Why can't the money for loans be given to students in grants and scholarships.
Having a student loan is like being in jail for a life sentence.
My loan is 23 years old. I paid off 4,000 half of what the original loan cost and it falls on deaf ears.
I believe it is an industry just like retail. If IT DOES NOT HAVE CUSTOMERS THERE IS NO BUSINESS.
The school I went to was in New York and is no longer in business. There was even a story about the school on 20/20 saying that they were charging what at the time would be a year at Harvard. When you graduated and I use the term loosely, the diploma was not worth the paper that it was printed on.
Students there were even guaranteed lifetime job placement, when the school isn't even in business anymore.
