I don't feel sorry for law grads. They knew very well that they legal field was already saturated, but they decided to go to law school anyway. They wanted that almighty J.D. behind their name, they weren't interested in making a real contribution to society. If they truly wanted to help society, they would have gone into a different field. They got what they paid for, so they should accept the consequences. Schools don't guarantee anyone a job, they simply give you the degree you pay for. Bed. Made. Lie.

My Debt from law school was 79K in 1997. It is now almost quadrupled at 315K, and the debt will grow to over 1.5 million dollars as the interest gets compounded at a fixed 8.25 percent interest rate over the next 23 years. Bankruptcy is not allowed for student loans.

The most valuable class I had in law school was my first semester legal writing class, all of the other classes I had were more or less worthless. Very few of the professors had ever been admitted to the bar, and fewer had actually practiced law for any amount of time. The legal writing class was taught by a retired lawyer who had had 30 years of experience in law practice.

Law school does not teach the techniques of practicing law and has little or nothing to do with actual law practice. The place I learned about law practice was when I was clerking for a small law firm while I was going to school; if I hadn't done that, I'd have known nothing about the actual practice of law.

Law school in general should be abolished, in favor of the old system of "reading for the law" in which aspiring lawyers serve a three year long apprenticeship in an established firm under experienced attorneys, and then take a bar exam. The tuition could be replaced by a modest stipend, and the spectre of student debt could be wiped out - and there'd be a higher chance of having newly minted attorneys actually being competent in their new law practices.
