The government should pay for ALL student loans. Why not? They pay for the extremely lazy SOBs that partied their whole life and now can't provide for themselves. Think about it, the people that went to college are the ones making this country better. Instead of punishing them for their hard work, they should be rewarded. Stop rewarding high school dropouts and deadbeats. Reward the people that not only actually pay most of the taxes, but really deserve it.

The danger I see is that students will pay off their loans and then walk away from their credit card debt. Sure, their credit will suffer for a few years but they can eventually restore their good credit status. Federal loans, however, never go away when you default.

Sallie Mae is criminal! The private student loan industry is a scam! Bankruptcy protection should be afforded to student loans -- as it had been prior to the passage of BAPCPA in 2005. Sallie Mae had once also been a government entity. Now, Sallie Mae is a hybrid-private corporation that not only gets government-backed benefits, but reeks in the benefits of being a private corporation... in that its executives and high-level management positions benefit most (not to mention, shareholders). This is all at the expense of the most vulnerable... students and their parents. This is a sham! And this country is becoming a sham! In other countries, university-level education is free. The Chinese, for example, enjoy free university education. France, Sweden, etc... all free college. But in the United States, we can afford to nation-build and fight wars; yet we cannot fight the fact that students have become indentured servants to quasi-government banks such as Sallie Mae. The only person in Congress fighting for us indebted students at the moment is Hansen Clarke; I urge that we all support his battle against banks such as Sallie Mae. Not only is bankruptcy protection for student loans fair, but it lets the banks know that they cannot simply lend an unlimited amount of money to students. Thus, colleges would no longer have a method to finance its students' tuition; and thus, tuition would need to be reduced so that it can be at a level at which it is affordable without excessive borrowing.

This is pernicious manipulation and opportunism on the part of Sallie Mae. Ordinary credit card debt can be forgiven in bankruptcy and despite the negative hype, a person's credit score can be rebuilt within two years.
However, by cosigning a loan, both parties are put in danger of loan sharking, constant harassment and judgments on property, wage garnishment, income tax refund grabs and other problems. Even if a person becomes disabled and is forced to live on the barest income, in my case, $700.00 mthly., Sallie Mae will insist on taking their cut, even though that will make it impossible to meet basic monthly expenses. Any advice this company gives , particularly in regard to private loans, should be ignored. They are a plague on American students and their families.
