I thought it was kind of humorous. Two things: grain of salt and everyone's experiences (and sense of humor) are different. Have a great day!

Think about your future and not the annoyances and understand your goal...to you really want to teach health & p.e. and put up with a smelly lockerroom in your worklife or do you want to teach history really because you get passionate about reading some of the items in your textbook. Quit sleeping in or you'll be working a low level job the rest of your life unless you get it together!

Although I agree with Dean of CA’s comments about immaturity, the authors fail to miss some annoyances that come directly from administration. My rebuttal:

Annoyance No. 1 Remedy: Trying to find the bright spot is a great suggestion IMHO. Dropping a class is not.

Annoyance No. 2: Remedy: Since when are overcrowded rooms the fault of students? Why didn’t the administrators of the course turn in their ‘large room request’ forms earlier? Classes have maximums, rooms have maximums; if a student is on the floor, it’s the fault of the person who scheduled the wrong-sized room. If professors choose to over-enroll their classes – which I am for to ensure students get their major coursework in – then room adjustments need to be made.

Annoyance No. 3 Remedy: So, the answer to getting into courses is favoritism? How egalitarian of you! Of course, your remedy does work, but sadly, to the detriment of students who are unable to register because of the university’s archaic registering systems (standing in lines for classes), registration preference (seniority/more class hours rules), and difficulties with department scheduling practices.

Annoyance No. 4 Remedy:

Have you seen your university’s website recently? Chances are it is a muddled mess. Each department has its own website with its own description of requirements that do not always match up with the descriptions from the university’s admissions or registrar sites. Oh, and try to get an appointment with an adviser in advance. Doesn’t always work.

Annoyance No. 5 Remedy:

Another good suggestion IMHO.

Annoyance No. 6 Remedy: No, actually the university needs to be at least with the curve in terms of technological innovation. Universities are supposed to be producing the best and brightest students to create new and awesome technology. The university should facilitate this growth by actually using the new and awesome technology produced.

Annoyance No. 7 Remedy: Ok, but why can’t the university offer healthful options for students? Subway is fine, but there is a limit.

Annoyance No. 8 Remedy: I am all about saving the environment! And many city universities have a deal with the public transportation system (if there is one) to allow students discounted rates.

Annoyance No. 9 Remedy: I agree with Tim of CA. Easier said than done.

Annoyance No. 10 Remedy: I agree with the applying for more scholarships and fellowships from departments, but they still do not cut it. Stories of students applying for scholarships and then actually receiving the money to pay for 4 years of college are extremely rare. Bald eagle sitting on an albino rhino rare.

Instead, let’s make college affordable, equitable and accessible. Let’s create a space for students, faculty, administrators, and other staff to actually feel good about what they are doing instead of worrying about job cuts, state-funding failures, and rising costs. Let’s concentrate on making colleges work for all people and not just those w

All the marxist dirtbags that can't keep a real job that end up teaching because they are lazy and shiftless and don't have to actually work.

All of these "annoyances" I've had.

These guys really don't understand how college is nowadays. He is simplifying every since annoyance as if there is no bureaucracy that goes on in college.

If you don't like your roommate, ask for a swap. Yeah because everyone can afford a $500 swapping fee.

If you have your class registration too late, get orientation sooner. Yeah because its not like everyone knows about this and signs up for orientation as soon as possible. C'mon writers when you are in a class of 4,000 students, is it really possible when everyone knows that thats how they put you on the list to register for classes?

Too expensive, just ask grandpa. Wow, does this solution even need a response?

I hate this class? Just drop it. Have these people ever been to college. Yeah you can just drop a class that you need for graduation. I go to a 35,000 student school and most classes are just given by one professor per semester. I'm sure this is the case at most schools and this article says to just switch classes?

I laughed out loud when I read this. I graduated in 1989. You know, back before we had personal computers and email ?? I had to type on a typewriter all my papers and my thesis. I had to actually do research in a real library !! I spent hours upon hours locating books, periodicals, and microfiche. Do you realize how time-consuming that was ? Imagine back when there was no World Wide Web ? haha

We had most of these problems back then. Just use your common sense and deal with it. I can't believe these crybabies. Don'y worry, your real problems will start when you graduate. You ain't seen nothin' yet, as they say.

A lot of schools require you to use their e-mail for any business pertaining to the school. Also many internships like it better if you are using your school e-mail address as well. Rather then switching to a free e-mail altogether, just get a separate one for personal. If you school e-mail is that bad, you can always try forwarding the e-mail as well, or using a third party mail application (like outlook, or mail)

Intern Counselor of CO 3:18PM July 08, 2010

Annoyance 10 - they think it's bad now, wait until they get out with 20K in debt and aren't able to find a job. Ha!

jared of OH 2:53PM July 08, 2010

If there are not enough seats and you are sitting in the aisle, this is a fire hazard and illegal. Talk to the registrar about this problem and have them reduce the class size to respect the actual physical space of the room or move it to a larger room.

Great response "Dean of CA", very true!
