11. Show up competent in writing from the git-go.

Freshman comp is a vast waste of time, both for students and for faculty. If you haven't learned to write an expository essay in 13 years of K-12 education, you're not going to learn it in one or two semesters taught by grossly underpaid adjuncts. It's simply a scam to support English departments, which otherwise are withering on the vine in an age when "higher education" means "vocational training" to most people.
