That this incident was captured on video. Otherwise this unfortunate student would probably not only be critically injured, but probably suspended and incarcerated.

Believe me, I know. My son was not as fortunate in a similar situation at Michigan State University. Mercifully, he was exonerated, but only after a 13 month ordeal including house arrest and a 6 month plus wearing of an ankle bracelet (this punishment was instituted prior to trial) Oh, and a two day jury trial AND approximately $100,000 in legal fees, fines and attendant costs. If only there were a video.

It is a travesty that such brutality and utter madness continues. What exactly are we teaching our students?

There are far too many incidents of police responding in an unprofessional manner. Police often resort to violence or illegal activities under the screen of law enforcement. What they actually accomplish is a mockery of the law and creation of a general distrust by the public.

Police must clean up there forces. Every good cop has a duty to report the inappropriate acts of the bad cops and to see that bad cops are immediately removed from the force. If the good cops will not enforce a reasonable standard of conduct, then, by default, they are also bad cops.

As a society, we must demand professional action by all sworn officers. We can not accept any excuses for inappropriate behavior. The excuse that police work is tough and demanding is unacceptable. If a cop can not handle the stress and rigors of police work, then they should quit.

Police often say their role is to serve and protect. It is about time for them to demonstrate that through their conduct and actions.
