I guess it's time to throw away our assumptions about the effect of back-to-back snowstorms on businesses in the Northeast.
Just when we were sure that this month's Snowpocalypse did no one any good, the Daily Pennsylvanian reports that some businesses around the University of Pennsylvania boomed during the blizzards. Local eateries saw major increases in traffic near Penn's Philadelphia campus. One candy store said sales last Wednesday jumped 150 percent from an average day.
The manager of a student-run coffee shop on campus tells the Daily Pennsylvanian that Wednesday sales were up 25 to 30 percent. "I figured it would be normal business," says Caitlin Jones, a Penn senior. She said that the cafe sold "lots of hot chocolate."
Who knew businesses on and off campus would be so successful when students had to journey through several feet of snow just to get a drink or some food?
