My step-granddaughter (healthy, 30) also died from complications of H1N1. She had difficulty breathing, and was also put into a coma because being intubated is stressful and wastes oxygen. We were told she developed pneumonia/pulmonary distress syndrome and ultimately her other organs failed for want of oxygen.

My prayers are with this family. No explanations can replace their loss, regardless of the cause.

Thanks for clarifying what happened to this student. My niece had the flu at Cornell at the same time, was told by the Health Center to just stay home and Gannett kept in touch daily by phone. I can not imagine what this family is going through. My thoughts are with them.

So what is the correct course of treatment? When my nephew had swine flu, he took tamiflu. I wonder what drug the hospital gave the child.

As a former Professor at Cornell, I was mismedicated at that hospital for about a year and a half. I'm not suing them because I just don't want to use my time/life that way. The ER seemed to me like HELL. This is only my opinion, not fact.

Andrew is correct; Warren was sent to Cayuga Hospital with flu-like symptoms, and during his treatment experienced an allergic reaction to a medication, which caused him to go into a coma from which he never awoke.

My thoughts are with Warren and his family and friends.

As I heard it from his close friend, there were serious complications with the virus, possibly involving problem treatment. The doctor induced a coma, and Warren never came out of it.

With all due respect to the decesed student and his family, was H1N1 the primary cause of death or was it a further complication to a different condition?
