Grand Valley State Students Seek Answers to Shooting

March 18, 2009 RSS Feed Print

A handful of Grand Valley State students protested at the Ottawa County (Mich.) sheriff's office, demanding to know more about the shooting of a GVSU student by a deputy last week, the Holland Sentinel reports. Derek Copp, 20, was shot in the chest while police were executing a drug-related warrant at the student's off-campus apartment.

Investigators said the 20-year-old student did not threaten or confront police when they entered the residence. Police have not revealed what drug they were searching for or if they recovered any narcotics in the apartment.

The protesters said the police have agreed be more communicative.

A spokesperson for the DEA said, "We had no choice. We had to shoot the young man to protect him from the dangers of drugs. We will shoot as many citizens as it takes, subvert freedom and democracy, and create a climate of oppression and fear throughout the entire nation in order to save Americans from the threat of drugs."
