Computer Science Rising in Popularity, Again

March 18, 2009 RSS Feed Print

A new report from the Computing Research Association suggests that interest in computer science is on the rise again and that total enrollment in computer science majors and pre-majors (including bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D.) is up 6.2 percent, the first rise in six years, the Chronicle of Higher Education reports.

The survey also found that the demography of computer science programs has not changed much. They still tend to be white or Asian, and male. Almost 66 percent are white, 15.5 percent are Asian, and 88 percent are male.

I have been unemployed for over a year now. I have a bachelors, masters, and was a part time Ph.D. student in Applied Mathematics while working a full time job. At the job I was at, I noticed that there was no need for anyone of my background and that most of the positions at the company, it is one of the GSEs but I will not say which one ... not that it matters since they are both the same in their practices, required the ability to learn mundane tasks then execute them repeatedly. This is a very sorry picture for the working element of one's human capital unit upon being ambitious. Anyways, what I would like to convey here is that no one needs your skills in the US to do a job. I am a US citizen, born and raised, and I will tell you that the almost non-existent service based economy we have become is lacking deep innovation. I am removing myself from the construct that I will find employment in the short term future and am returning to my Ph.D. full time to either do one of the following:

1) Innovate or

2) Innovate

There is no way around it ... press harder and Innovate in order to ride out this wave because even those with jobs are highly susceptible to being replaceable w/o adequate preparation for the transformation of the job market currently and to come ...

Friends,

I have been in this field for over 18 years... constantly sloughing, hard working keeping myself involved in latest technologies...but alas, ever few months getting laid off or projects moving offshore...The capitalist of US wont spare you..just as they never spared the textile, auto and other manufacturing workers....If you have sense...understand economics and rethink the mistake you step into..else embrace lifetime unemployment..Cheers..my advice is sincere and truthful..make no mistake..its your whole life

College students now have to spen too much for text books. In my days at the university we were able to reuse books but today the update of information is critical.
