Thousands descended upon New York's City Hall Thursday to protest Gov. David Paterson's proposal to cut higher education and healthcare, the Washington Square News reported. The plan would slash aid to schools by $2 million and raise tuition at state universities.
New York University students were in attendance, but it was Hunter College students who walked out of their classes in protest of the tuition hikes. "CUNY is made up of working-class students and students of color who really can't afford to go anywhere else," said one of the protesting Hunter students. "It was supposed to be free when it opened up, and tuition has been increasing ever since."
