Much like its neighbor at Harvard, MIT's admissions office has laid off staff, will reduce travel spending by up to 50 percent, and will move much of its communication with students online in a move to cope with a 5 percent budget cut, the Tech reports. All this in a year that has seen a 17 percent bump in applications (15,600 total) compared with last year.
MIT's travel will very likely not be cut as dramatically as that at Harvard, which will limit high school visits mostly to local schools. MIT says it is still committed to finding students in underserved areas, like the inner city.
