Vanderbilt has canceled its alternative spring break trip to Monterrey, Mexico, because of gang violence, the Vanderbilt Hustler reports. Monterrey, which sits along the U.S.-Mexican border, has seen a sudden escalation in gang and drug violence. In mid-February, street protests to condemn Mexican Army presence in the city resulted in at least two deaths.
Vanderbilt officials canceled the trip after parents and students expressed concern about events in Mexico. After it was canceled, nine of 11 students who were to go to Monterrey were placed at other locations. Two decided not to participate in the program altogether.
