Someone who writes about higher education should understand the difference between tuition and fees. The increase was in fees, not tuition. Tuition has been held steady for a few years.

The tuition waiver is only 1.7k. They're raising costs by 1.5K so I got $200 bucks. And for what? A 50% job placement rate? The career center refuses to release the names of companies that recruit from the school. You'd think that colleges would like to show how attractive the school's education is by showing solid recruiters.Any red flags yet? From my perspective the "low cost" of the school is a poor trade off for career placement

Not that it matters, as far as what students are required to pay, but I believe the increase is going to be in fees, not tuition. In-state tuition is only about $1,700/yr.

Aside from Amherst, Dartmouth Boston and Lowell are complete jokes of schools. What justification can they possibly have for such massive cuts in spending AND such a large INCREASE in revenues? Sounds like they're using the recession as an excuse to rip their students off even more... I don't like it because i don't understand. The only thing i do understand is its complete bull. The school claims they don't have enough $$, well where the f*** am i gonna find $1,500 extra bucks??

Im a student at UMass and would personally rather pay an extra $1500 than to have any of my professors lose their jobs. It's obvious that there is no easy way to handle the crisis that the this country is in and everyone must make sacrifices. There are schools whose situation is far worse than ours. For what this school offers its students, the increase in tuition still makes this school the best value in the country. (in my opinion)

My Alma Mater is doing the same thing...cutting budgets, laying off faculty and staff and increasing the tuition. So now students are getting less and paying more!? Bye bye value. I just don't understand. Go buy stock in online universities, their value is on the rise as students transfer and people look for real value in this economy.
