Vennard College to Close

Vennard College—an 80-student Christian college in Iowa—will close at the end of the semester, the Des Moines Register reports. Mounting debt and stagnant enrollment are to blame, and officials projected a deficit of $300,000 for the semester, with an even worse outlook for 2009.

The school closed in the mid-'90s over similar financial problems, but officials believe this time, the college will not be coming back.

The school will hold a college fair for other Christian colleges to recruit students, and a final commencement is scheduled for November 22.

I am involved in a research about the Hymn, "The Old Rugged Cross." I've heard that Rev George Bennard, the author sang the hymn during an evening gathering at Chicago Institute of Evangelism, the predecessor of Vennard College.

Would anyone have information related to this? Please contact me.

My brother called me to share the news. I attended at the end of the 1960's. I have heard of former students who used Vennard as a launching pad to their current careers. I was too immature to do the college thing. I later used my military career and some basics of my time at Vennard to complete my Bachelor of Science degree. Financial hardships are hitting all around us and I am sad to hear of this closing. But the blessings of the faithful shall live on in the harvest. I wish to extend my thank you to the adminstration, faculty and staff for sacrifices made through the years. Dan Nelson
