Berkeley Football Coach Was UC's Top Earner

August 1, 2008 RSS Feed Print

University of California-Berkeley's football coach, Jeff Tedford, was the highest-paid employee of the UC system last year, raking in $2.8 million, the Daily Californian reports. That places Tedford easily in the top 10 highest-paid coaches, although still behind college football's top earners, Les Miles from LSU and Nick Saban from Alabama, who both make about $4 million. Unfortunately for Cal, Tedford's team ended up seventh in the Pac-10 with a record of 7-6, making each victory worth $400,000. Bears: Think you got your money's worth?

The rest of the UC system's top 10 is filled with athletic coaches and health officials from UC-Berkeley, UCLA, and UC-San Francisco. The new Berkeley chancellor, Robert Birgenau, made $430,116—not enough to put him in the top 10.

I think its pretty crazy this guy is making 3 times as much as the chancellor of the university. UCB has pandered to this guy a great deal, even promising him a new addition to the stadium without bothering to consult the city of Berkeley with regards to complying with city code, environmental impact, safety standards, etc. They clearly place an extreme emphasis on this one sport and this one individual, which is both unfortunate for the rest of the university and also really out of control, given that the citizens of California are the ones basically paying the (tax) bill.

This gentleman obviously does NOT appreciate the scores of thousands of fine scholars who attend colleges annually in this blessed land on athletic scholarships. Virtually all of these fine youths -- and the coaches who grim and mentor them -- will never play down in the NFL, NBA or another professional league, but they do so much for their schools by sacrificing on the fields !!!! Without these scholarships -- often funded by the money made by the larger Division I schools -- these sportsmen and women might not be able to afford college.

Get a life, FL Bill .... and acknowledge the impact the Bowdens, Sabans and Spurriers of our land have had on countless young men.
