Congrats to the '08 Wesleyan graduates! This was an awesome EVENT! The call to service can mean so much to a few (or many) that hear it. What a way to enter the really world. IF YOU CONSIDER MOVING TO NYC THE REAL WORLD.

Nate:

To clarify, I don't think McCain has given or will be giving a commencement speech this year.

Liberty University = Chuck Norris (which is cool)

Columbia University = Cardinal Edward Egan

New School = Henry Mintzberg

But I do believe you're correct that he's given speeches at those schools in the past.

You said: "But the lost sleep of university officials most likely didn't register with euphoric graduates and guests, who were treated to the only commencement speech in the country by a presidential candidate (as far as I can tell)."

John McCain has indeed given commencement speeches in this campaign and recently at that (he spoke at Jerry Falwell's Liberty University, Columbia University, and at New School).

In fact, John McCain was received very differently at New School, for example, than Obama was at Wesleyan University.

Maybe you can report on this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wVQlFz9W8k

With the recently hospitalized Sen. Ted Kennedy bowing out of delivering the commencement speech at Wesleyan University, his gigantic shoes were filled by none other than Barack Obama. The presidential candidate proudly filled in, delivering a stirring speech that had many graduating Wesleyan seniors overwhelmed with guilt about being secretly glad this was the year Kennedy found the tumor.

Though the event was closed to students and their families, one Wesleyan student filed this report, exclusive to 23/6: http://www.236.com/news/2008/05/27/an_overstimulated_underinforme_6778.php

@ the first responder: Apparently you care, at least enough to take the time to register a comment on the subject.

Yes indeed... who cares about a public address given by the front running candidate for the Democratic nomination for the presidency in front of 20,000 people... made as a last minute substitution for one of the highest profile members of the US Senate recently diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor? How in the world is something like *that* news? Where are the critical updates on which celebrities are currently dating which other celebrities? Come on press, do your jobs!

::::Disclaimer: Careful now, don't choke on the sarcasm. It got a little thick there::::

Wow. This felt like a totally useless article. Who cares.
