Michigan Under Fire Over Athletes' Academic Integrity

I found lots of interesting information on www.usnews.com. The post was professionally written and I feel like the author has extensive knowledge in the subject. www.usnews.com keep it that way.

A post above said, "so what." When a similar situation happened at Auburn University the only thing that prevented the NCAA from getting involved was the fact that most students receiving preferential treatment were not student-athletes. Not only were the great majority student-athletes here, there seems to be copius testimony that the athletic department actively encouraged this activity, and that the administration knew of this and turned a blind-eye. BIG storm clouds could be looming for UM.

Does the U have problems? Yes, but fewer than those of other schools. The issue of athletes getting preferential treatment is a pressing one, but this story is a non-story and was an attempt at self-aggrandizement by Jim Carty and The Ann Arbor News, just like how Jim Harbaugh's comments were intended to promote Stanford at Michigan's expense.

It is indeed unfortunate that there is some basis to these accusations; unfortunately, these accusations are not bolstered by honesty and integrity. And it doesn't make it right, but there are important lessons that athletes learn outside the classroom that many students do not learn at all, especially in this day and age where $40,000-a-year college is becoming dominated by more and more upper-class kids.

I would like to point out that the articles focus primarily on UM football and not all UM athletes.

As an alum I am very distressed that there seems to be more voices that are impeaching Ann Arbor News articles than taking the University to task. University officials state that they did "nothing wrong" when in fact the evidence shows that everyone walked the fine line of manipulating the system.

The Ann Arbor News "story" is no story at all. What it alleges AND substantiates brings forth a simple response: "so what; so what; so what!" Don't give this story "legs" that it doesn't deserve.

you should be. you steal coaches (shifty sleazy ones named Rod)

This story essentially corroborates comments made by Jim Harbaugh for which he was severely taken to task by Bill Martin and because of which he apparently was not considered for the UM coaching job despite being almost the only coach able to defeat Southern California...and therefore Ohio State one would assume. Denials all around were issued then too. It appears that we can no longer claim the rarified atmosphere of Stanford, Northwestern, Notre Dame or Penn State...we're down with everyone else. All of the trends in UM football are negative and as an alum and long time ticket holder and supporter, I'm sad.
