Brigham Young Students Object to Racy Material

Brigham Young University students are up in arms over the racy material shown in nearby private gyms, the Daily Universe reports. Gold's Gym is a nationwide chain, and its nearby facilities are dominated by BYU students—some who are now requesting that the gym allow members to change channels on TVs, reconsider dance classes that "use provocative moves," and revise its music video and movie content—including screening out racy or explicit PG-13 films. "We feel it's a big deal, especially at BYU," said one of the objectors. "All of a sudden, students see explicit, racy, promiscuous videos. It makes it harder for them to keep their minds pure."

As a student and gold's member, I think that student's need to realize they will not be sheltered forever, and if they have a problem keeping their minds pure, that is something only they can deal with.

As a recent BYU alum ('07 0_o), I just wish the campus facilities for all students were better. Instead, a premier facility on campus is only open to the sports teams (namely more than one weight/locker room for the football team). Then maybe a few souls with sensitive eyes would not have to be on a treadmill watching others dance provocatively. However, Gold's Gym (two are within 2 miles of campus) has been in Provo for years, why the outcry now? As Chuck said, go elsewhere, the 24hour Fitness might suit you. (personally, I like to run without the aide of a treadmill, i.e. fresh air)

On a lighter note concerning campus facilities: I've jokingly heard the new indoor practice field and the new training center referred to respectively as the Rameumptom (a Book of Mormon reference, see Alma 31:21) and the Holy of Holies (because all trophies and awards are now housed there).
