Football Fans Declare Their Own National Holiday

January 7, 2008 RSS Feed Print

The BCS national championship game is upon us—and for those with their academic priorities straight at Ohio State University, that means a road trip to New Orleans, according to the Lantern. Lucky Louisiana State University students don't really have a decision to make—LSU is still on vacation and a game at the Big Easy is practically a home game—the Superdome is less than a two-hour drive from Baton Rouge.

Meanwhile, denizens of snowy Columbus have already packed their Buckeye paraphernalia—assured that their "pretty cool" professors will have little problem with missed labs and discussions. The athletic department even sent out a memo titled "Class Attendance and BCS Game," leaving the issue of skipped class to the discretion of the instructors. "My teachers were really understanding about it," one student told the Lantern. "It would be great if the university canceled classes for that day. But I understand it's a short quarter." It also happens to be only a football game.
