MSU Drops Domestic Partnership Benefits

Michigan State University is the latest to join the state's employers who will no longer offer health insurance benefits to partners of its employees in same-sex relationships, the State News reports. Michigan employers are dropping their domestic partnership benefits because a February Court of Appeals ruling said that the 2004 state amendment passed by voters banning gay marriage also bans such health benefits. The state Supreme Court will rule at a later date whether to uphold this opinion. —Jackie Mantey

If you look at the trends of the country as a whole, and particularly as it relates to higher education (http://www.hrc.org/documents/Workplace04.pdf) MSU and the State of Michigan are heading in the wrong direction. In this time of economic downturn and most importantly given Michigan's status as the nations leading job loser it is time for the residents of the Great state of Michigan to stand up, declare war on job-loss and institute any measure which makes the state more competitive to employers and employees. Limiting business opportunity in the state because of political ideology is shameful.
