In Emergencies, How Do You Warn Everyone?

At the University of Southern California, the college is debating how it would handle similar attacks. "We do not have a formal procedure to try and lock down this campus," Department of Public Safety Capt. David Carlisle tells the Daily Trojan. "It would be very, very difficult, and if a situation occurred like what happened at Virginia, it would take a significant amount of resources to contain [a suspect] in that situation, much less shut down the campus." Students tell the Trojan that notification by E-mail or text messages would be the fastest way to communicate the emergency, but even those won't reach everyone.

Texas Tech also seems to be favoring the text-message alert idea, the Daily Toreador reports. But right now, the university's Mobile College message service is just a voluntary service students sign up for to receive alerts about campus organizations and classes plus some ads.--K.T.
