UCLA Student Workers Want to Unionize

Student activists at UCLA have given a new twist to the old fight to unionize university employees: They want to unionize themselves. To get working conditions and pay on par with nonstudent employees, student workers should join a local union of government employees, the activists said Friday. The Local 3299 chapter of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union now represents 5,000 UCLA employees. If the 50 or so student activists have it their way, the number would expand by 1,200, to include the students who work at places like campus coffeehouses and the campus store. They presented their proposal Friday to the Associated Students UCLA board of directors, the group that employs students, the Daily Bruin reports.
