Univ. of Wisconsin on Edge after Assaults

Several high-profile crimes—including at least two abductions—have left the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus on edge, the Daily Cardinal reports. "I don't feel safe on campus," one student says. U.S. Department of Education statistics place the campus on a par with similar schools, another story says. But that doesn't take into account crimes in the city, and crime has been particularly alarming this academic year.

The city of Madison has seen a spike in sexual assaults over the past three years, with eight in January of this year alone, the Cardinal reports. Some students are taking proactive measures; in late 2006, for instance, Greek groups partnered with police to form a night watch program, the Cardinal says.
