Winter Break Report: Wisconsin Student Rescues New Mexico Woman

+ More

University of Wisconsin-Madison sophomore Peter Kottke just meant to spend his winter break backpacking, but he ended up also saving a woman's life. On a hike through the Gila National Forest in New Mexico, Kottke discovered a 52-year-old woman from South Carolina who had been stranded for nearly five weeks, the Daily Cardinal reports. Rescue workers had stopped looking for the woman two weeks earlier, after finding her car abandoned. But thanks to a snap decision to change routes in the middle of their hike, Kottke and his brother discovered her--and last week, she was recovering in a New Mexico hospital, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported.
