Athletics: Important or Just So-So? Duke Professors Disagree


Athletics and academics are not and never should be seen as equal partners, two professors wrote in the Duke Chronicle this week, defending a parody they drafted of a law professor's plan to reconcile the two. The law professor had proposed assigning professors to sports teams to improve understanding; the parody writers proposed assigning coaches to sit in on classrooms (coaches can read? What a joke!).

Yesterday, two other Duke professors stepped up to the athletes' defense in an op-ed piece, arguing the parodists "overlooked the extraordinary value" sports provide students and faculty. A duel has not yet been scheduled.
