The University of Alabama wanted to expand its Huntsville campus--so it sent $220,000 to a Washington lobbying firm in 2005, up from just $80,000 five years before, the Crimson and White reports. The University of Massachusetts spent even more, paying at least $280,000 in 2005, the Daily Collegian reports. Republican Tom Coburn, an Oklahoma senator, asked both schools for information about their lobbying activity this summer. U. Mass. refused to comply, and though the University of Alabama's chancellor did send a letter, it was not complete, the Mobile Register reported.
