I think it is great that there is something being done to protect children in the schools from being shot. What I have difficulty with is the myopic approach CPS is using. What about other children who do not fit the specified criteria? Many of our children walk through neighborhoods that are unsafe due to gang violence and drug traffic ad well as a myriad of other problems. These children (more than 1200) seem to be ignored by this CPS plan. Look at Roberto Clemente for example: a drop out rate of over 40%. There have been studies that indicate that many of these students drop out because they feel unsafe traveling to and from schools and because of much of the gang influence in the neighborhood. Depaul University did one such study of elementary and high schools in 1989. They looked at indicators of student drop out at both levels of education. The results of that study have not changed much in 20 years.

What is being done for all of our children in the schools? It seems that this proposed program is myopic in scope and may be in place only to make headlines. CPS: look out for all of our children.
