Community Colleges are over-utilized and under-resourced at a critical time in our nation's history. Even before the recession, enrollments at these institutions were way up. Whether we are talking accelerated workforce training programs or in-demand career and tech ed programs that lead to degrees and certificates of value, we need to ensure that community colleges have the resources and are held accountable to produce quality 'middle-skill' professionals that constitute the majority of jobs in our economy (e.g. allied health technicians, line installers, computer support technicians, lab technicians, truck drivers, etc.). This will be critical during the economic rebound, but only if community colleges also improve completion rates and build effective pathways with 4 year universities. Read the entire plan and you will see that programming issues were also addressed in addition to facilities investments. I look forward to a collegial debate an outcome that allows this nation's youngest sector of education to mature and prosper with the New Economy during and after the recovery.

The number of students entering Community Colleges needing remediation is ridiculous. Why tell these kids that their 2 year degree will get them anywhere? Most would be better served in a vocational high school that graduates them with an honest trade, so they don't fall prey to unscrupulous post secondary trade schools. We need mechanics and electricians-- we don't need people who are over their heads in debt on college loans for useless degrees, or worse, dropping out before graduation.

Restore pride in learning from kindergarten on -- stop telling kids that they deserve a college degree. They don't -- they deserve a strong foundation in their formative years. With that in place, they will succeed in life.

This whole college-for-all plans sounds a lot like the plot of The Music Man -- promise the world, and get out of town before the bills come due.

Community Colleges are a great way for many to further their education at an extremely price, however, the government has no business getting involved. This is just another way for this man to further his socialist agenda. remember what Jefferson said. "Any government that is big enough to give you what ever you want, is big enough to take it all away.

I agree. Community Colleges should be the vanguard for economic recovery. They offer excellent short term training for obtaining jobs in demand occupations like health care and truck driving. They also serve as a very effective conduit to four year colleges.

Community Colleges serve as a bridge between high school and major universities. I strongly encourage high school students to take advantage of the cooperative agreement signed by school districts and Community Colleges. These agreements allow high school students to get dual credit (toward their high school diploma and college degree) by taking approved courses at their Community Colleges. This gives students the added benefit of "tasting" college life and makes the transition easier. The post secondary dropout rate has been shown to be greatly reduced.
