I don't see how they think this doesn't keep people in the state. If someone has the Governor's Scholarship, they obviously have HOPE as well, so that $900 goes a long way to cover residence hall and meal plan costs. With FAFSA and this scholarship, I didn't have to pay anything out of pocket to attend UGA, while Duke or Harvard would have cost thousands. Practically free college education? I'd say that appeals to a lot of students.
In the end, that's almost $1000 that I don't have anymore. And in the grand scheme of the state budget, is $1.3 million really so much?

It should go without saying that the money did "serve its purpose." After receiving the Governor's Scholarship for only one year, and then receiving a letter just a couple of weeks before the end of school telling me that this was in the best interest of the state, I'm very disappointed and a bit disgusted as well. As a matter of fact, I turned down an offer from the aforementioned Harvard to attend Mercer University in Macon, GA. Go figure...

They sure did a poor job in notifying students. I've been counting on that money, considering it was "promised" to me for four years, and finding out a month before I need it that it's not coming isn't easy to swallow. Did I mention that the way I found out was having to e-mail the Georgia Financial Aid people wondering where the application had gone? If they wanted to discontinue the scholarship they should have let it continue for those that had already been granted it for four years, and just not given it out to future students.

As a prior Valedictorian from Georgia, I am sincerely disappointed that the legislature chose to cut funds to this scholarship. As it is, Georgia lags behind in educational support and resources. It is disappointing to hear about another situation in which state officials and administrators continue to cut these already lagging resources.
If this is what they do, they will continue to limit opportunities to pursue educaton. Ultimately, these acts discourage students from becoming strong, influential citizens in their societies. It has long been shown that the best investment a government can make in its people is in their education. Clearly, Georgia will continue to be ranked in the bottom of education in the fifty states if administrators act this way.
Somehow the state does not realize this is an incentive that creates more opporunities and actual profits them in the future by building the potential for community leaders.
