Texas Schools Face the Evolution Debate

Every school board member and every politician in Texas should see Ken R. Miller's presentation on The Collapse of Intelligent Design on Youtube. URL is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVRsWAjvQSg&feature=related. The Intelligent Design is a conspiracy of the Religious Right. It is about a special interest group - the

creationists forcing their religion on all of us. It is so funny that the creationists perpetrated this hoax of Intelligent Design and now all of the Creationists believe the lie, and knowing that it is a lie want to teach it in school. See YEC website: http://www.yecheadquarters.com/index.html. This is God - awful.

This shows they have now honesty, no integrity and definitely no credibility with anyone when they play this game of the "end justifies the means." The irony of this whole struggle is that the Creationists want to protect their Christian morality yet we can see they do not follow the morality that they preach every Sunday. Jerry Falwell's statement after 911 was the biggest embarrassment to the religious right and shows the kind of mentality of the leaders of this movement. The Discovery Institute and the Creation Museum are good examples of what the religious right believe and what you would have to teach in your schools. You will also have to teach Islam too. The Dover case cost the school district over 1 million dollars in court costs and the real cost should have been 2 million dollars. I smell a law suit.

In response to "I don't see how learning about evolution is needed to become a doctor..."

Ever hear of microevolution?

Did you know bacteria evolve rather quickly? All of modern medicine is based on the ideas of evolution and speciation.

I sure hope my doctor learned about and understands evolution...

@Abigail Chapman of TX.

You are woefully underinformed about evolution if you feel that there is very little evidence supporting it.

It is as solid a theory as gravity or germ theory. There is no explanation that even comes close to the TOE in its explanation for the variety of life and speciation. It is supported by mountains of evidence and has not been contradicted by ANY evidence in over 150 years.

It has NEVER failed and continues to make accurate predictions to this day.

It meets EVERY specification for a valid scientific theory.

COmments like this drive me crazy because although you disparaged the creationist ID being taught in schools, you add fuel to the fire in this "debate".

There is no question that the TOE is the cornerstone of all biology and anyone who doesn't accept it, clearly doesn't understand it.

"Because Texas is one of the largest textbook buyers in the nation, its approved curriculum can influence the content of textbooks that are sold to other states and school districts across the country."

This is so scary!!!! Evolution is a scientific theory that should be taught in schools. Children who attend public school should not be forced to learn that we were created by intelligent design. Intelligent design can be taught in private religious schools, because obviously, the values coincide, but to teach intelligent design in a government funded and regulated institution is ridiculous. What ever happened to the separation of church and state?

If you want your children to learn about intelligent design, send them to a private religious institution, home school them, or challenge them to think about what they learned in school. Do not try to adjust science.

I am not fully confident in the theory of evolution, but it is a scientific theory. There is little scientific evidence to support the theory of intelligent design. There is a little evidence, but again, very little evidence. It is plain the theory of creationism is founded on religious beliefs. As a college student growing up experiencing these changes in Texas public schools, I can tell you I have never once heard of any science teacher presenting the theory of intelligent design without some kind of judeo-christian influence, or personal preference. Be reasonable. Does anyone really expect a hindu, buddhist, muslim, or mormon teacher to influence presentation of creationism with THEIR personal preference? I honestly cannot even believe this theory can be presented in a scientific classroom at all. I was raised a non-denominational Christian. I am very well aware of the scientific evidence behind intelligent design. I can tell you as a student majoring in Biology: there simply is not enough evidence to support this theory as a valid scientific theory. Ideas such as this should be the parent's job to teach to their children. It should not be included in a public school classroom. Ask yourself how an atheist student feels-in a public school district that imposes a mandatory "moment of silence," creationism in a science classroom, and classwide prayer at their graduation ceremony, held in the local church.

The point of my last comment is that evolution doesn't make a difference in future jobs.

You can leave it out, but if you leave it out, leave both of them out (creation and evolution)

If you teach one, teach both (creation and evoltuion).

And no, this doesn't lead to muslims getting their sayin schools or any other religious group. The point of creation is just some higher being or intelligence rather than some expanding/exploding matter. These are the only two options. As long as you don't start classifying the intelligent designer as GOD, YHWH, Zues, MARDUK, etc... we will all be fine. Leave the "Who" at home.

I don't see why you need evolution to be taught to know how to be a doctor. It is in the end needless for a doctor to know. You don't have to believe that you EVOLVED to practice good medicine or physics for that matter. Nor does belief in a creator of some sort limit your capacity to understand medicine and other science. All that is called to account is the HISTORY of the human race, not the current status. Whether or not evolution is taught makes no difference in how well a person can learn medicine or physics. Evolution as in evolving from monkeys which is what most people think when they think evolution... they don't think natural selection, etc, etc, which is also not necessary for a doctor's knowledge). The only area it might have effect on is Biology, but even then, why do you need to know it. It doesn't affect what you need to know here and now, it is just HISTORY. put it in the history classroom.

C of TX 5:55PM September 18, 2010

If you can explain why monkeys still exist today but no monkey man, do so. If any scientist in the world can explain how the a single molicule or organism is formed from nothing to something, please explain...i assure you not one scientist in the world can. Even the famous Richard Dawkins admits in the doc. Intelligent design that he believes there is some kind of intelligent design, some higher power...it's interesting to here that so many will say religion is a fluke but the THEROY of evolution which has no beginning is more real that creationism, religion. If our children are taught in schools the THEORY of evolution they need to be taught the THEORY of Intelligent Design. How can they teach one but not the other. America seeks equality. there it is. God Bless our children, schools and America.

Religious types often do not realize that bu filling the limited space in their childs head with worthless drivel about "Inteligent Design" they are not only wasting space in their kids brain, but are giving him the sort of background that will keep their child OUT of medical school, the sciences, & higher learning in general. As a result, their child will end up getting a start down the road that leads to making cheese & farming with the Amish, or as a men's room attendant in the big city.

The Amish make GREAT products in spite of their outmoded lifestyle,& lack of electricity, or indoor plumbing, and I will always need someone to clean the Toilets at the mall, so as long as these LOONS teach their worthless drivel to their kids at HOME where it wont waste MY kids time , I am ok with it, secure in the knowledge that my kid (The Doctor or Physicist) will be able to by good organic produce from their kids, and that the toilets will be clean.
