Quality, not quantity is the solution. If the 4 day work week is 4 days of quality work by teachers and students, then it will work. However, if classroom management is poor, then no student will learn in a 4 day work week or a 7 day work week. This is a temporary fix to budget problems, but more emphasis should be placed on student mastery of state standards. How many schools are actually making sure that EVERY student has mastered ALL of Arkansas State Standards? Or any state for that matter. Many states are laying off teachers and forcing them to become substitute teachers. The pay is much less, but teachers have no options at this time because jobs are scarce. If shortening the work week will save jobs, I say YES!

About the deportation. Yes, this bright student will have to leave the U.S. after so much hard work. I am sure that he can use his same ambition and drive to improve the conditions in his home country. There are so many people deported today, there is nothing anyone can do to protest this. This is a legal matter, and I can't comment any further about it. So many misfortunes occur with this subject, but with the type of ambition this young man has, he is sure to succeed wherever he goes. He might consider looking into some international scholarships or grant opportunities elsewhere. America is not the only country with opportunities.

Physical education is very important, and I think 30 minutes is a good amount of time for this activity. Does this include health education class as well, or strictly physical activity?

The idea for a 4-day school week is being tossed around by a lot of school districts and I think it's a good temporary fix during difficult financial times. The school day would be longer in order to provide the same number of "seat hours" each week for students, and working hours for most staff. The main complaint from parents is going to be the childcare issue. School isn't designed as a babysitting service. As parents are able to find childcare options on school holidays and during the summer, one day a week should be manageable. The financial savings aside, the 4-day week should help absenteeism of both students and staff. Student absenteeism is highest on Fridays and Mondays as many families travel over the weekends and don't make getting to school a priority. I think having an extra day to spend with my kids or for doctors appointments would be great.

I am awed at the fact that people failed to comment on the most important subject of this article. Our faulty Immigration laws are aggressively attacking a student with a bright future and clearly displacing him from the home that he has established since 1992. To me, this is an outrage and the fact that nothing can be directly done about and that no one had brought is up a a concern it is yet a deeper let down.

there is no difference between 30 minutesa of physical activity a day, and 150 minutes a week. and anyways, at the local middle school, the students are required to have approximately 45 minutes of physical activity a day, and the high schoolers even longer! and i rememebr when i was in elementary school, we had longer than 30 minutes of PE!

I agree, people from MN must be ignorant!!! We are military and are stationed here in Arkansas, I have to say that out of all the places that I have lived Arkansas ranks #1. I have never been around such nice people. And let me add well educated. Get out more. Meet some southerners and maybe you will learn a few things. Visit Arkansas and enjoy the true southern hospitality. You will never want to go home.

I'm dissapointed in all the comments concerning a 4-day week. Rather than continue with the prejudices expressed shouldn't we be more up in arms with the fact that our children will be getting less education? - All of our children, from all states? Our educational system in America is failing when compared to schools in other countries and rather than decrease spending to schools we should be spending more. Perhaps that's the problem with the person from MN - not enough quality education? As for those with degrees, Masters, and Doctorates don't you want to give that legacy to your children? Let's become outraged about our children being short-changed their opportunities instead of being hurt over someone who doesn't have an open, educated mind.
