Now that Obama has won the White House we will have a concrete education policy in place. While I don't want to get into much about Obama, I want to respond to EMA's comment about the City schools in Chicago. They are not the worst schools in the country. That esteemed title belongs to those in our nation's capital - Washington, D.C. Just a stones through from President Bush are the worst poverty stricken, below standard, crime and drug infested schools in country. So while Bush sat there for 8 years he watched the schools within walking distance of his house go further into desperation. Look no further than the grammer used in Ms. Smith's reply above mine!

Any effor to correct the current status of American schools have my vote! Some of you should really check the facts before you spout ignorance.

Yeah right, we saw what he did when he was over providing grants to organizations in Chicago, along with his business partner Ayers, now what was that, he turned away grants for math & science but gave grants to Jeremiah Wrights church and other black youth of America groups. The Obama campaign sent out in a hurry emails to all of their sheeple to interrupt free radio that was being given concerning the public records that were just released from the organization that both him and Ayers were on the board with. He talks a great talk, full of empty promises, if he honestly cared about our childrens education he would have taken care of the public school system in Chicago which is the worst in the country. Isn't he supposed to be representing his state, so Chicago's school system has a 55% drop out rate of kids that don't graduate and only 6% continue on for a college education. I don't want him interfering with my childs education because again, he's done nothing to help education and will continue to funnel money through to corrupt organizations.

if everyone is foccusing one fixing the educational system. nothing will ever get done. we need a plan to help us know in our time of need. we need to stop children form dropping out of school in there teens! to give the american youth a better education we need better buildings to teach in new books and equipment. what we need is someone or at least something to help us all out. lastly fo anyone reading this we need to watch and observe whats going on. we cant forse our the american youth to learn. we need to guide them. maybe someday someone will listen and try to help instead of push

You don't need to spend more to get more. Too little money goes to new teachers, and too much for administration. Pay for merit. And get 80 percent of the money to the classroom. Reimpose strict discipline, eliminate half days off, increase use of virtual academies, and encourage and help homeschooler parents. Schools should stop showing unrelated cartoons as education, and instead expect more from and provide more to the students. Teachers should stop trying to be their friend. The teachers' unions should purge unqualified, underperforming, and misbehaving teachers and staff from their ranks. Make the kids work for their education and they'll appreciate it more.

Like RC of OH, i too worked through my college years to pay for my tuition. It was not easy but i did it through determenation and hard work. As an educator, i agree that we should help people make a better future for themselves, however "free college" for people going into the teaching profession?? As it is, there are many people who should not even be in the education field. Can you imagine how many more will become teachers just for the benefits and not so much for the welfare of the students? As it is, people think teaching is easy, that it is a nice job because you get "long vacations," we don't need more people who don't really want to be in this field making our education system even worse. People who want to be in the field should be there for only one purpose... To help improve our education system and help students in our schools succeed!!

I have worked in higher education for several years and I do agree that as tuition costs rise it will continue to become increasingly difficult for families to afford to send their children to college. That being said I agree with Darlene in the fact that people do not appreciate something that is free. I see students everyday who waste away the opportunity that is given to them. I came from a lower middle class family and worked hard to pay my way through college. I believe that students should have the opportunity to earn their way through college through work programs, scholarships, etc. with some government assistance. Making college free will not solve the problem it will only cost money to the people. Force the students to step up and earn the privilege to get a college diploma, but do not make it something that they are entitled to.
