5 Ways for Premed Students to Maximize Physician Shadowing

Here is a question. I was a practicing vocational nurse in the critical care setting for nearly ten years. Becoming a physician has always been a goal of mine and I am now in a position to apply. I have an undergraduate degree in molecular biology, have a graduate degree in epidemiology and biostatistics, and am currently working on a protein crystallography project (last two years) in Dallas. I wanted to know if it is still considered necessary to shadow a physician since I have the practical healthcare experience. I shadowed a few house officers when I was at the hospital years ago. I would have a hard time fitting it into my current schedule, but I will if it is absolutely necessary.

There's a new website that I found that has a database of physicians willing to allow Pre-medical students to spend time in the office shadowing. Their database is not very big yet, but I am sure some may be able to find it helpful. Just my 2 cents.

In retrospect it would be best to make sure you do this before applying. Do not be afraid to ask people you do not know. If you are unsure, consider academic medical centers. There are many other helpful pieces of advice besides this, that are often in guidebooks on Amazon and from the AAMC.

Online learning is not the complete solution for everyone, but it can help many of them greatly. You go to education with the tools you've got and one the tool is the online High Speed Universities go research yourself
