As a private college counselor, I think you are right on. The same goes for students going on to higher education. When the parents are supportive of their child getting a college degree, it is a powerful motivation. The question is, how can we get more parents involved in their child's education? When we come up with that answer, I believe the quality of our schools and the expectations will dramatically improve.

Couldn't agree more that the biggest driver of a student's academic success is parental involvement. At younger ages, I think it is important for parents to emphasize STEM topics, especially science, because there is not a lot of time in a school day that emphasizes reading, writing and math. One way we do this is by reading short (2 minutes) science articles with our family and discuss. We also blog these entries at www.supersmartcarbon.com.
